Moving an aquarium or fish tank

An aquarium is a box of glass held together by silicone and supported entirely by being level. Almost every tank that breaks in transit breaks because it was not fully emptied.

The short answer

An aquarium must be completely drained, with substrate and decor removed, before it can be moved. Water weight and flexing will break the silicone seams. PORTR carries empty tanks and cabinets but does not transport live fish or water.

How should an aquarium be prepared?

Rehouse the fish first, then drain the tank completely. Remove substrate, rocks, ornaments, heaters, filters and lighting, and pack them separately. The tank must be empty and dry, not nearly empty.

Clean and dry the base, then support it properly for transport. A sheet of rigid board under the tank spreads the load and prevents point pressure on the base panel, which is where cracks start.

Why does water weight matter so much?

A modest 200-litre tank holds around 200kg of water. Beyond the obvious weight, the problem is movement: water shifting in a partly filled tank flexes the panels and puts shear stress on seams designed for static pressure.

Substrate is the second hazard. Gravel and sand slide across the base panel and act as an abrasive under load, and they add weight in exactly the wrong place.

How is an aquarium move priced?

From the vehicle needed for the tank and cabinet, the real driving distance, the handling time, and the access at both ends. Larger tanks need two people because they are both heavy and fragile.

Tell us the dimensions in the notes. A six-foot tank is a different job from a starter aquarium and it should be quoted as one.
