How to transport a wardrobe

Wardrobes are the item that most often defeats an otherwise well-planned delivery. They are tall, rigid, heavy and built to stand in a room rather than travel through one.

The short answer

A double wardrobe usually needs a large van and two people, and it must clear the diagonal of every doorway on the route. If it does not dismantle, measure the diagonal before booking, because a wardrobe that cannot tilt through a door cannot be delivered.

Why is the diagonal the measurement that matters?

A wardrobe is moved through a doorway by tilting it, which means the critical dimension is not its width but the diagonal across its depth and height. A wardrobe 60cm deep and 200cm tall has a diagonal well over two metres.

Measure the doorway height and width, then measure the wardrobe's depth and height and work out whether it can tilt through. Also check the ceiling height of any hallway or landing where the tilt has to happen, because a low ceiling removes the room needed to swing it.

Should you dismantle a wardrobe before moving it?

Flat-pack wardrobes generally travel better dismantled, and many will not survive being moved assembled because the panels rely on the back board for rigidity. Older solid-timber wardrobes often have removable doors and a separable cornice, which reduces both weight and bulk considerably.

If you do dismantle it, bag every fixing and tape the bag to a panel. Wrap doors and mirrors separately and mark them clearly. PORTR does not reassemble, so plan who is doing that at the other end.

How is wardrobe delivery priced?

From the vehicle the wardrobe requires, the real road distance, the handling time it realistically takes, and the access at both addresses including stairs and lifts. Every element appears as its own line before you pay.

Access is a genuine cost driver here rather than a surcharge. Carrying a double wardrobe to a second-floor flat with no lift takes materially longer than a ground-floor delivery, and the quote reflects that when you declare it.

What should be done before the van arrives?

Empty it completely, including the top shelf and any drawer units inside. Remove or secure the hanging rail, tape the doors shut, and take out any internal glass.

Clear the route at both ends and prop open doors that swing closed. If there is a parking restriction outside either address, say so in the notes so the driver can plan where to stop.
