The short answer
A mattress should travel flat or on its edge, never folded, and it should be bagged to stay clean. A double or king mattress fits a medium or large van. PORTR prices mattress delivery online from the size, the road distance and the access at both ends.
Why should a mattress never be folded?
Pocket-sprung and open-coil mattresses contain a rigid internal structure that is not designed to bend. Folding one can distort or snap springs, and the damage is invisible until you sleep on it.
Memory foam and hybrid mattresses tolerate slightly more flexing but can develop permanent creases and delamination. Rolled foam mattresses are the exception, and only when rolled with the machinery designed for it.
How should a mattress be protected in transit?
Use a proper mattress bag, or wrap it in heavy polythene sealed with tape. A mattress that touches a wet pavement or a dusty van floor unprotected is difficult to bring back to a usable state.
In the van it should be strapped flat or stood on its long edge against a side wall, not sandwiched under heavier items where the springs take the load.
How is mattress delivery priced?
From the vehicle the mattress size requires, the real road distance, the handling time and the access at each end. A single mattress over a short local distance sits at or near the minimum booking value.
Adding the bed frame at the same time is usually far cheaper than booking two separate journeys, because the marginal cost of a second item on the same run is small.
