Fridge and freezer delivery: what to do first

Appliances are the category where preparation matters more than transport. A fridge that has not been defrosted leaks into a van; one laid flat and switched on immediately can be permanently damaged.

The short answer

A fridge or freezer must be emptied, defrosted and fully dry before collection, and it should travel upright. After delivery, leave it standing for several hours before switching it on so the compressor oil settles. PORTR quotes the job online from the appliance, distance and access.

How should you prepare a fridge or freezer for collection?

Empty it entirely, switch it off at least a day in advance, and defrost it fully. Remove all shelves, drawers and glass trays, and either pack them separately or secure them inside so they cannot move.

Dry the interior thoroughly and leave the door slightly ajar until collection to prevent odour. Tape the door closed for transit, and coil and secure the power cable against the body rather than leaving it hanging.

Why does an appliance need to travel upright?

Refrigeration systems rely on compressor oil staying where it belongs. Laying a unit flat can allow oil to migrate into the coolant lines, which at best requires a long settling period and at worst causes lasting damage.

American-style and tall freestanding units are particularly sensitive because of their height-to-depth ratio. Tell us the appliance type when booking so the vehicle chosen can actually accommodate it standing up.

How is appliance delivery priced?

From the vehicle required, the real driving distance, the handling time, and the access at each address. Appliances are heavy and rigid, so the honest answer is that stairs materially change the time involved.

A tail-lift Luton is available for the heaviest units. Selecting the appliance accurately in the item list is what allows the right vehicle to be matched rather than a guess being made on the day.

What are the access questions worth answering honestly?

Which floor, whether there is a lift, how wide the narrowest doorway is, and how far the van can park from the door. Kitchen doorways in particular are often narrower than front doors.

If the appliance is being fitted into a run of units, measure the gap before it arrives. A delivery that cannot be positioned is only half a delivery.
