eBay collection only: how to get the item delivered

Collection only means the seller needs the item collected from their address. PORTR turns that into a simple door-to-door booking: add the seller’s address, choose your item and collection details, then book a clear online price.

The short answer

For a collection-only eBay item, PORTR collects from the seller's address and delivers to yours door to door. Your price is calculated online from the item, the road distance and the access at both ends before you commit.

Why does eBay list some items as collection only?

Sellers mark an item collection only when it is too large, too heavy or too fragile to go through a parcel network at a sensible price. Wardrobes, sofas, appliances, garden equipment and glass-topped furniture all fall into this category.

It is not a sign of a problem listing. It usually means the seller is being realistic about what a courier will accept. The consequence is that the buyer becomes responsible for transport, and that is the step most people have not planned for when they place the bid.

What should you agree with the seller before booking transport?

Agree a collection date and a time window the seller can genuinely commit to, then book transport around that window rather than the other way round. Booking a van first and negotiating afterwards is the most common cause of a wasted journey.

Confirm who will physically be present, and get that person's mobile number if it is not the seller. Establish which floor the item is on, whether there is a lift, and whether the item is already accessible or still assembled in a bedroom.

Ask whether the item needs to come apart to clear a doorway. PORTR drivers transport items; they do not dismantle furniture, so anything requiring disassembly should be handled by the seller before collection.

How much does eBay collection-only delivery cost?

Your price is assembled from four things: the vehicle the item actually needs, the real road distance between the two addresses, the handling time the item realistically takes, and the access at each end. Each of those appears as a separate line before you pay.

Because the vehicle is matched to the item, a bedside cabinet is not priced as though it needs a Luton van. Small items travel in a small van or a car, and the price reflects that rather than defaulting to a full-load rate.

Choose a customer-selected collection date and delivery timing that work with the seller’s availability. The quote shows the price for the available options before you book.

What can go wrong, and how do you avoid it?

The three recurring problems are an absent seller, an item that does not fit through the door it needs to leave through, and an item that was never dismantled. All three are avoidable with a short conversation before you book.

Measure the narrowest point on the route out of the seller's property and the narrowest point on the route into yours. A sofa that fits the front door but not the stairwell turn is still a failed delivery.

Put anything unusual in the access notes. A driver who knows about a second-floor flat with no lift arrives prepared; a driver who discovers it on the doorstep loses time that you are paying for.
